Two Blog Posts on Business Storytelling
Business storytelling is important. However, people confuse advice for professional storytellers with practical advice for business writers.
Here are two blog posts on the topic.
The first post talks about professional storytelling advice. This includes short discussions on Kurt Vonnegut’s famous “Shape of Stories,” the book Storyworthy (good if you want to give a brief personal talk), and Pixar’s legendary storytelling framework. I think these are all excellent sources, but I think they put unnecessary pressure on business writers.
So, the second post gives four practical tips for good business storytelling. These four tips are: use more examples, get to your examples faster, make your charts into mini stories (and see the book storytelling with data), and use a challenger model (an easier way to translate Vonnegut’s or Pixar’s ideas to a business setting).
